The Uses and Abuses of Political Violence

It feels like a very personal loss, and of course, our fury and devastation at this political attack. Political violence should have no place in this country.

Gerard: The only thing now more routine than political violence is the shock that greets it. The tedious and self-evidently false declarations that such acts have, quote, "No place in America". The vow that they must never happen again. All as we wait with absolute certainty for the next one.

The First Amendment is supposed to be this pressure release valve. Politics is a substitute for violence in many ways, right? We can't have one creep over into the other.

Gerard: The truth is that political violence is a reality of modern American life. Both sides use it as part of their evermore apocalyptic campaign to win at all costs.

We're gonna walk down to the Capitol.

Gerard: They embrace it both directly, when it suits them, whether stop the steal rioters storming the Capitol and knocking police officers unconscious before enjoying the post-hoc validation of a Presidential pardon. Or anti-immigration enforcement rioters burning cars and fighting police as they try to execute their lawful duty to deport illegal aliens. But they also embrace it in an indirect and even more potent way, as a convenient tool for blaming the other side, a device for demonstrating their opponent's villainy and their own virtue.

This MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that's existed in American history.

Gerard: The reality is that the U.S. has been in a rhetorical civil war for at least a decade.

Do you think Donald Trump is a fascist?

Yes, I do. Yes, I do.

Gerard: Details are still emerging following the killing of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband and the wounding of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife last weekend. But social media was quickly its usual toxic soup of allegations, rumors, and flat out fabrications about the suspect. Indeed, read some of the blood curdling posts on social media, and you realize that many of the combatants in our angry, ugly, 24 hour political strife actually want the other side to be killing their comrades. They're desperate for proof that their side is the victim.

I am angry because an extremist United States Supreme Court thinks that they can impose their extremist views on all of the women of this country and they are wrong!

Gerard: Both sides also insist there's no connection between their words and their supporters' actions. And it's true, the line of causation is hazy.

He didn't just have a gun. He had zip ties.

Gerard: Three years ago, a would be assassin was arrested outside Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's home in Washington, DC.

This is exactly the kind of event that many worried the unhinged, reckless, apocalyptic rhetoric from prominent figures toward the court, going back many months, and especially in recent weeks, could make more likely.

Gerard: The point is most of the outrages we've witnessed in the past few years have been the work of minds individually disordered to one degree or another.

I was there at the shooting in 2017 when Steve Scalise almost died, just feet away from another young staffer that was shot just next to me. So I'm aware of this. I've been the victim of political violence. I had six ribs broken and part of my lung removed. So we know about this. We're very aware of it.

Gerard: Now, to be clear, I don't think the vast majority of our political leaders, or even most of the swivel eyed media influencers with millions of followers-

Take a look at what happened.

Gerard: Actually want violence. Just as I don't think they really believe their opponents are America's mortal enemy. But if words have any meaning at all, what do they expect? They seem to think their dark warnings about the other side's intent will win the political debate for them come election time. But this is like setting fire to a single tree in an arid forest to demonstrate the harm an arsonist can cause.

Some people need to look in the mirror and say, hey, I've gotta stop this or stop my colleagues from doing this, because it makes it much worse. We need to bring the tone down and we also need to stand up when people do bad things.

Gerard: If we don't rhetorically disarm, if our political leaders don't stop peddling dire warnings about their opponents, if our hot take pundit class on television and social media don't stop cosplaying civil war from behind their laptops, the fire that's coming will consume us all.

Now's the time for us to recommit to the core values of this country, and each and every one of us can do it. Talk to a neighbor rather than arguing. Debate an issue. Shake hands, find common ground.
