The Economics of … Slavery’s Legacy

There is no topic where economics doesn't have some unique twist on the subject. The history of slavery has helped form the identities of generations of African Americans, and as economists, it's not like we don't acknowledge the horrific nature of slavery, but we don't stop there. The great power of economics to say, how can we actually use data to answer questions that seem unanswerable? Can we actually measure the effects of slavery on generations today? Are there current health challenges that might be traced back to the treatment that people endured for centuries? Are there current effects of slavery on things like trust? Economists have collected tremendous amounts of data on the daily activities of slaves on plantations. They kept records on the market prices of humans. If they were blacksmiths or carpenters, they got higher prices. If they were seen to be drinking alcohol, they got lower prices. And what they were able to uncover is that slave production was incredibly productive and efficient, in particular, gang labor where the amount of profitability for those plantations was greater than others. There's a fundamental difference of thinking slavery was the subjugation of Black people to keep Black people down, versus when maximizing profit can go too far. How we teach slavery really matters. That's why it's really important to me that we think about slavery from an economics perspective as well as from a moral perspective. When you teach the economic perspective on it, it enables students to come out of this thinking, yes, founded on racism, but it persisted because the economic incentives to do it were so large. For many of my students, that feels less personal than it's just about subjugating Black people. Perhaps a more sophisticated, more rigorous understanding of slavery will help its descendants heal.
