Pope Leo XIV and the Direction of the Catholic Church

I'll begin with a word in English and the rest is in Italian, but I want to repeat the words from the responsorial psalm. I will sing a new song to the Lord, because he has done marvels, and indeed not just with me, but with all of us, my brother cardinals. As we celebrate this morning, I invite you to recognize the marvels that the Lord has done, the blessings that the Lord continues to pour out upon all of us.

Reporter: Delivering the homily in his first mass as Pope in the Sistine Chapel, Leo XIV pledged to be a faithful administrator of a Catholic Church that must illuminate the dark nights of this world.

I would say that he brings a wide variety of perspectives. He brings what it means to have been born in Chicago, what it means to have been educated here in the United States, what it means to serve in Peru. As the head of Congregation of Bishops, he was very, very familiar with the worldwide church.

I think what happened was that the Latin American cardinals backed Prevost for pope, because remember, he had worked in Latin America, both as a bishop and as a priest for 20 years or more. So I think the Latin American cardinals saw him as one of their own, not a gringo. And so with their solid support, I think he began to gain more support from the other cardinals, and that got him elected.

Reporter: A translation from the Catholic News Agency of his first homily as pope gave a good indication of direction, which in part goes like this. "A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family, and so many other wounds that afflict our society," he said. "And these are not few. Today, too, there are many settings in which Jesus, although appreciated as a man, is reduced to a kind of charismatic leader or superman. This is true not only among non-believers but also among many baptized Christians who thus end up living at this level, in a state of practical atheism."

Pope Leo XIV is not a successor of Pope Francis. He's a successor of St. Peter. So in whatever way that he feels he can best be that vicar for Christ is what he's going to do. It's not quite like political candidates where you're kind of following in a platform or an agenda. The platform is the same. The emphasis that you put on that may vary.

He is a Augustinian priest, which means he's a religious, like Pope Francis was. Pope Francis was a Jesuit. Prevost was a Augustinian, and so he went to Latin America to serve the people there. Actually, it's interesting. Pope Francis wanted to be a missionary, but because of his health, they wouldn't let him.

Through the ministry of Peter, you have called me to carry that cross and to be blessed with that mission, and I know I can rely on each and every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a church, as a community of friends of Jesus, as believers, to announce the good news, to announce the gospel.
