On Wednesday, something really creepy happened at the White House. First Lady Melania Trump hosted an event for 45 first spouses from around the world that was billed as a global summit on AI and education. The only thing I learned is that AI is super creepy. Mrs. Trump is a runway model, and she strutted into the meeting with a friend. Figure 03, an AI humanoid robot. How are these things supposed to look? Are they supposed to be people? Or are they supposed to be like Rosie the maid in the "Jetsons"? It's walking in a very sort of awkward, clunky, stiff way, genderless until it spoke. And when it talks-

It's got uptalk, vocal fry. It could be an NPR host. This robot is made by a company called Figure. Figure's CEO, Brett Adcock, claims that quote, "Positively affecting the future of humanity is the moral priority of our time." He says his ambition is to spend his time and resources on maximizing his "utility impact to humanity". That is meaningless jargon, meant to assure you that there's nothing to worry about here. But I work with words for a living, and when I hear meaningless jargon, I get plenty worried.
