Who Is Roaring Kitty and Why Is GameStop Stock Up Again

Everyone on Wall Street is talking about this man, Keith Gill, and he's the man who led hordes of individual investors into GameStop stock. And then he went into hiding for a little bit, and we didn't seem to hear from him for several years. That is until recently. Let's take a look. Keith Gill built an online following several years ago. He became known for his passionate and lengthy online streams detailing his investment thesis in GameStop, and many investors looked to him for his commentary, and they also piled into GameStop stock as a result. People hadn't heard from Keith Gill since 2021 until this May. A social media account tied to Gill posted this tweet. It's just a meme, it doesn't even say the word GameStop on it. But because of Gill's history with the stock, many individual investors took this meme as a cue to pile into GameStop stock, driving a huge run the next day. This led to a frenzy in GameStop shares driving the stock up significantly, and leading to a very volatile session in GameStop. In fact, trading was so frenetic in that one day alone that stock exchanges had to halt the shares to give everyone a breather and a timeout. But then nearly three weeks later, the stock jumped again when Gill posted a screenshot on Reddit showing a position in GameStop worth more than $100 million. Since Keith was posting last time around, we've learned quite a bit about the meme stocks. For one, there were congressional hearings where Keith, Robin Hood CEO, Vlad Tenev, Ken Griffin at Citadel were grilled on the whole meme stock craze and whether it was harmful for everyday investors. We've also learned quite a bit about the risks at play, where meme stocks don't just go in one direction up, they can also come crashing back down, leaving many investors with big losses. So many investors have brushed off the meme stock craze, you know, saying, it's no big deal, or it's over now that interest rates are higher, but it keeps coming back time and time again. So the concern out there is are people going to pile into these stocks again and be left with big losses?
