Why Intuit's CEO Hires for ‘Pain and Suffering’ Over Pedigree

Does it affect who you hire? Do you not worry so much about people's grade point average, but look at grit and resilience?

A hundred percent.

Really?

You have to be able to have the craft, but I look for, I mean, yeah, I was interviewing somebody yesterday, the whole time, my focus was, do you actually have the grit? Do you have the perseverance? Have you had pain and suffering in your life? Do you actually know how to go through pain and suffering? Do you know how to get on the other side of pain and suffering and create greatness? That always, that talent, I'll take any day of the week. And it's not, by the way, not too many people have it.

What's the biggest mistake you've made as CEO?

You know, it's a great question. The reason I'm pausing is because I make at least a mistake or two every day, so you learn from your mistakes.

Alan: Well, you have lots to pick from.

You know, the couple I would say is, talent mistakes are probably the biggest mistakes that I have made, and, of course, without getting into names, I have learned to always go with my instinct and gut, and so the talent mistakes I've made have been folks that had all of the skills but didn't actually have the resilience-

Yeah.

to deal with pressure.

Yeah.

And I've made multiple talent mistakes like that, and it always goes back to, you know, character is defined in times of crisis, and it's revealed in times of crisis, and the biggest mistakes I've made is leaders that could not handle the pressure.

Alan: Do you figure it out pretty quickly and move to correct it?

Yes, yes. Very quickly.

Do you have a question you ask people you're interviewing that sort of reveals whether they have the grit and resilience to survive this crazy time?

That's a great, I ask a lot of open-ended questions, and I also spend more time saying, "What questions do you have of me?" Because I learn a lot. The best diagnostic is what questions the other person asks of you.
