When do I find out the results of this?

Interviewer: Tell me about your first job.

I was maybe 13, 14 when I first started delivering newspapers, the "Daily Oklahoman" in the morning and the "Oklahoma City Times" in the afternoon.

Interviewer: Did you get tired of doing it?

Oh yeah. Yeah. I'd get tired. I developed a strong shoulder and I always perched it on this shoulder so I was not really thinking about building up muscles but I guess it did after a while. And I didn't wanna forget this side either.

Interviewer: What skills did you learn on the job?

I could three corner those things as fast as I could walk. A little like this and then folding it back like this and then connecting the two sides. Isn't that a great shape? A side throw like that, you know. And look at that, it stayed together.

Interviewer: Were there any challenges?

I'm sure every paperboy had dog issues but we did our best to work around those.

Interviewer: Is there anything you would do to celebrate a successful shift?

Yes, I would celebrate by sitting down at the table with a quart of milk and reading the newspaper.

Interviewer: What's something you drew at that age?

I always liked talk bubbles. I thought that was a good way of communicating in this kind of fantasy world. I did so many little imitation cartoons made with Higgins India Ink. I spilled a bottle of it once and it hardened and I'll never forget that. It's just a deep blackness that kind of got me into the world of art. Even abstract shapes would be interesting with it. And it also evaded the idea that you had to have color in making art.

Interviewer: How did your time as a paperboy influence your art?

I had this momentary dream. Is the idea of going to each one of my homes that I delivered paper to and making a little replica of the house. And that kind of evolved and maybe stayed with me for so many years until I eventually made that book called "Every Building on the Sunset Strip."

Interviewer: Did you enjoy growing up that way?

It was a great place to grow up but a place that I eventually had to leave.

Interviewer: And why did you wanna leave?

I had traveled with my folks and we went to California once and it was like the opposite of Oklahoma. And so getting to California was a symbolic thing that I felt I had to experience. When I finally went to art school I couldn't get into ArtCenter school, so I chose second best. The second best was the finest thing that ever happened to me because at Chouinard you could do anything. We were happy just to talk to each other through our work and we would do, you know, make art for the sport of it. You know, we had no concept that you could make a vocation out of it or make a living from it. It's just like absurd to think about that.

Did you ever meet anyone cool when you were in art school?

Most of us got, or were fortunate enough to meet Marcel Duchamp. Respected him greatly and were very influenced by him in his thinking. I remember him the way he smoked a cigarette. This, to me was like a European way of holding a cigarette. This is the American way. So he would smoke cigars and cigarettes in both ways.

Interviewer: And did you copy his style at all? Did you adopt his European ways?

Nah, that's too pretentious to imitate.

Interviewer: Did you ever imagine that you'd see your name in the paper one day?

No. Never thought about that. When I look back on it, I think that I must have lived in a black and white world. It's almost like an old movie and today it's a different kind of scene.

Interviewer: What career advice would you give to your younger self?

Well, I always liked what Max Ernst said and what do you do for a young artist? And he said, "Cut off an ear." That's an amusing thing, but I would say "Invent and fabricate your own future."
