WSJ White House Reporter: How Trump Uses ‘Two Weeks’ Deadline as a Tactic 

I'll do this at some point over the next two weeks. Less than two weeks. I could answer that question better in two weeks or four weeks from now.

Trump has a habit of repeating things, phrases, or you know, he dwells on certain things, and for years he's been using two weeks to buy time or stall.

I have a message directly from the President, and I quote, "Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks."

Two weeks is a long time. It could also be a very, very short time for him to decide. And that's part of Trump's strategy, right? It seems is to keep people guessing, keep Iran off guard.

Reporter 1: The thought process behind two-weeks time change?

Just a time to see whether or not people come to their senses.

Alex: A number of weeks ago, President Trump said he would determine within two weeks whether Vladimir Putin was serious about peace in Ukraine.

Reporter 2: Do you still believe that Putin actually wants to end the war?

I can't tell you that, but I'll let you know in about two weeks. Within two weeks, we're gonna find out very soon.

Reporter 3: President Zelensky of Ukraine says that Ukrainians are ready for a ceasefire. They're ready for peace negotiations. In your mind, is Ukraine doing enough to get this peace?

I'd rather tell you in about two weeks from now.

Alex: That timeframe went and passed. Trump did not act on that, and still the war rages on. Trade is obviously a major issue. It's rock global alliances. Trump has pushed forward with his trade wars. And back in May, he said...

At some point, in the next two weeks or three weeks, I'm gonna be setting the deal. I'm gonna say that such and such a country has had a tremendous trade surplus their way with us. They've taken advantage of us in various ways.

A lot of the trade deals that Trump needs to work out have not happened and that two week period has passed. He wasn't saying we'll have all these deals done in two weeks, but he was saying we'd show progress on that and that's an area where they have fallen short on. When he says two weeks, it's a lot of things are at play. Certainly there are times when he says that, we all know that there's nothing behind it. For example, if he's talking about infrastructure plans as he did in his first administration, it was generally assumed that there wasn't a real plan there. In other instances, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. In Iran, for example, there are very serious deliberations. He's been constantly in the situation room talking with his advisors. At some point, it's kinda funny to hear him say two weeks. It's also, this is a very serious situation that includes potentially bringing the US into war and so he's trying to take as much time as he can to make a good decision on that. He is very solicitous of ideas and opinions from people around him, both in the White House, his friends in business. And so, it can lead to what looks like on the outside indecisiveness, and certainly there are times when that looks like that's the case. But other times it's his way of working through problems, putting them aside or delaying and trying to get more information, or hoping that something emerges, some other solution pops up.
