 The U.S.-China Tariffs Agreement, Explained

The big news out of Switzerland is what some people in markets are referring to as a dream scenario. The U.S. and China have really stepped back from the brink of what could have been a very destructive trade war, both for their own economies and probably for the world at large. Washington and Beijing have agreed to cut tariffs on each other's imports for 90 days. That does give both sides quite a bit of time to try and hammer out, you know, the framework for a much broader agreement on trade. So the tariff reduction is much bigger than people were expecting, and what this means is that they don't want trade between China and the U.S. to stop completely, which is what was in danger of happening when tariffs were at the eye-watering levels of more than 100% than they were before. One way we could think about this is, this is a classic negotiation ploy by Donald Trump, where he really goes for a maximalist approach, and then when things change, the other side will take whatever they can get. So certainly coming from 145 down to 30 sounds like a good deal when you put it in those terms. But for Beijing, you know, they do realize that this is certainly an increase in tariffs on their exports to the U.S. Markets around the world have been rallying, so U.S. stock futures are definitely up. The dollar is up. Markets in Asia are up. It is a pretty big deal for the global economy, not just the U.S. and China. You know, you need to have the U.S. and China growing pretty healthily to pull along the rest of the global economy. They want to cover a lot of grounds. They want to cover currency, they want to cover, you know, subsidies, they want to cover industrial policy. Can that be done in 90 days? Frankly, it seems unlikely. I think what is probably more likely and more believable and the kind of thing that people are expecting is that they will kind of agree to keep talking and agree to a framework for talks that, you know, lets this sort of proceed without tariffs going up again.
