Key Takeaways From Trump’s State of the Union Address

A short time ago, we were a dead country. Now we are the hottest country anywhere in the world, the hottest.

President Trump gave a combative, fiery, and divisive State of The Union Address Tuesday night, taking the fight right to Democrats, talking about the economy, immigration, foreign policy, and trying to stuff as many viral moments as you can into a two-hour speech.

They wanna cheat. They have cheated. And their policy is so bad that the only way they can get elected is to cheat. And we're gonna stop it. We have to stop it, John.

There are three main takeaways from the speech, though, that people will probably be talking about for many weeks to come. First is the way that he engaged with Democrats and the way Democrats responded. President Trump said Democrats should be ashamed of themselves for the way they acted during the speech. He also said they were crazy.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries had warned Democrats not to engage with President Trump and for the ones who attended the speech to mostly be quiet. Instead, we had Congressman Al Green stand up and get escorted out within minutes of the speech beginning. And two other congresswomen were yelling back at Trump when he was screaming at them during the speech. There was a lot of back and forth and fighting. And there was no olive branches extended by either party. We're less than nine months now from the midterm elections, and you could see the battle lines being drawn during this speech. President Trump attempted to create a viral moment halfway through the speech.

If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support. "The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens."

Democrats did not stand up during this part of the speech. Something Republicans were gleeful about as they believe that illegal immigration will remain a huge concern for voters heading into the midterms and a huge divide between Democrats and Republicans as it has been since President Trump first ran for office in 2016. President Trump tries to look at speeches like this as an opportunity for him to be a great showman. He awarded several medals over the course of the evening. He introduced the men's hockey team from the Olympics that had just won the gold medal.

Lawmakers: USA! USA!

And he also introduced Erica Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, who was killed last year. These are things that President Trump hopes will create more buzz and energy for Republicans heading into the midterms and a way for him to extend leverage over Democrats and a way for him to continue to drive the narrative, only something the President of the United States can really do.
