Colorado Flamethrower Suspect Charged With Hate Crime: Here's What We Know

Passerby: We're here, brother.

Narrator: The man who attacked a group with makeshift flamethrowers in Boulder, Colorado, told authorities he had planned the attack for more than a year. He said he wanted to, quote, "Kill all Zionist people," and said he would do it again, according to court documents. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, seen here with apparent burn injuries, has been charged with a federal hate crime among other charges. Authorities say he shouted, "Free Palestine," as he threw two Molotov cocktails into a crowd of people who were raising awareness about hostages held by Hamas. Authorities said there were at least 12 victims and two remain in the hospital. Soliman was arrested near a backpack weed sprayer that potentially contained a flammable substance and a black container with 14 unlit Molotov cocktails, an indication that he intended to do even more damage. He allegedly told law enforcement that he researched how to make Molotov cocktails on YouTube.

He said that he had previously tried to purchase a firearm, but resorted to the Molotov cocktails when he could not purchase a gun because he was not a legal citizen.

Narrator: Police searched Soliman's home in Colorado Springs on Monday. It's more than an hour and a half drive from the scene of the attack. Officials also said Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, was in the US on an expired visa at the time of the attack.

These individuals are going to be deported and we're not going to tolerate such violence in our country.

Narrator: The attack targeted the Boulder chapter of a group called Run for Their Lives, which calls for the release of hostages being held by Hamas.

Group: Run for their lives! Let them go now!

Narrator: According to the group's social media pages, it had been holding an 18-minute walk every Sunday in Downtown Boulder, beginning around 1:00 PM. More than a dozen photos and videos posted online show the group stopping to hold posters and flags in front of the Boulder County Historic Courthouse.

A number of people participated in a peaceful walk and gathering on Pearl Street here in Boulder. It is a place where a lot of people gather every day. And the ones who join in this peaceful gathering are now the victims of a senseless, unjustified, and horrific mass attack.
