The Conclave Elects an American Pontiff

The College of Cardinals made history on Thursday when it selected an American as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church, Chicago born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost took the name Pope Leo XIV, as he called on the world's 1.4 billion Catholics to advance together. So can the 69-year-old pontiff unite the progressive and conservative wings of the church? We're back with Kim Strassel and Mary Anastasia O'Grady. So after 266 tries, Mary, America finally won one at the Vatican. So what do you make of this American pope?

Well, first of all, I think that it's important to note that he spent a lot of his career outside of the US. So I think that was one of the things that gave him some street cred, because they wanted somebody who, you know, could appeal to other places in the world where the Catholic faith is growing.

Paul: Latin America is one of them.

Yeah, and Latin America is one of them. The other two things that jumped out at me was, when he came out on the balcony to meet the flock, for the very first time, he was wearing very traditional garb. And I think that sent a signal because Pope Francis went in a sort of a different direction. And that's not to make a comment about Pope Francis, but I think a lot of Catholics are going to be comforted by the idea that he's going to look to the tradition of the church more than perhaps Pope Francis.

Paul: Particularly on doctrinal matters?

Yeah, of course. But you know, the other thing that jumped out to me was his name Pope Leo XIV, because of course, Pope Leo XIII was the Pope in the late 19th century who wrote a famous encyclical called "Rerum Novarum," which was about how, what the moral obligations are of Christians in a world that was industrializing. So he talked about workers' rights, and you notice in the media now, they're all talking about workers' rights, and Pope Leo XIII, but he also talked about how socialism was basically harmed human dignity. He supported private property in that encyclical. So it's not a social justice encyclical as it's spun in the media now. It's very much an encyclical that talks about our obligations as Christians to care for the poor and also the Christian ideal that, you know, which our leadership is supposed to teach us that materialism and consumerism will not bring us happiness in this life or in the next life. So that's very much the theme. And Pope John Paul II really liked "Rerum Novarum" and referred to it on many occasions. So a pope that we like, a pope that didn't like communism, was also a supporter of what Leo XIII did.

And it's a very important point Mary makes, Kim, but nonetheless, the press is pitching, describing Pope Leo XIV as a progressive in the mold of Pope Francis. But how do you see it? Is it more complicated than that?

Yeah, I think it is more complicated, Paul, and in fact, I think what the church was striving for here with this pick was indeed some more nuance. Look, he was close in the last couple of years to Francis. He was a close aide to him. And initial suggestions are that he's gonna continue Francis' attention to the mission of the poor. Also, apparently he has a very strong belief in environmental issues as well too. But speaking of names, you know, the original Pope Leo, Pope Leo the Great, he was a reformer, but he was also a very skilled diplomat. And that seems to be more what Leo is aiming at and what he's known for. He is a lot more considered in his comments that he makes. Whereas Francis often made comments off the cuff that tended to rile people. Leo has his job was to suggest bishops to the Pope. And so he is got very close ties with a lot of the cardinals, and he's very aware of the divisions and schisms within the church and seems to be interested in maybe trying to heal some of those. And that may get to why he, you know, wore the garb that he did that Mary said, and other comments that he's made suggesting he does care very much about church teachings and traditions. I think that this might be a pick designed to heal some of those rifts.

Mary, briefly, one of the other elements here maybe they were looking for was somebody who has administrative skills because the church sure needs it. I mean, they're broke or close to it.

Yeah, first of all, he's very intelligent. He speaks like six languages, and you know, and he knows the curio, the bureaucracy inside Rome. So I think that's gonna be really important, because in order to manage it, you have to know it and be able to navigate it. And I think he has those skills

And who knows, maybe coming to America, he can call on some American donations.
