RFK Jr's Vaccine Panel Purge

HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday announced his picks to serve on a federal vaccine advisory panel. The appointments came just days after he abruptly removed all 17 former members of the advisory committee on immunization practices, or ACIP, which makes recommendations to the CDC about which vaccines children should receive and when they should receive them. Kennedy said his committee replacements would review not just new vaccine recommendations, but current ones as well, and make decisions based on science.

We're bringing people on who are credentialed scientists, who are highly credentialed physicians who are gonna do evidence-based medicine, who are gonna be objective, and who are gonna follow the science and make critical public health determinations for our children based upon the best science.

We are back with our panel. Kim, what do you make of Kennedy's decision to replace them all on the committee and his argument for why they had to be gone?

Paul, I thought Anthony Fauci was damaging to trust in public health, but RFK Jr. has got him beat. I mean, his argument that there was a conflict of interest seems to amount to the fact that the people who were on this panel actually knew something about vaccines. And he doesn't like that because he has an agenda and solely for the goal of forwarding his agenda, he is removing those people from this panel and then stocking it with a bunch of toadies who already have preconceived notions against vaccines in aid of his trial lawyer buddies. That's the real conflict here, Paul.

Well, on the conflict point, Allysia, Kennedy said that the previous members of the panel were conflicted because some of them had done work with pharma and on vaccines. But when you looked at these cases, were there actually real conflicts that influenced decisions or not?

No, and first of all, they recused themselves from any decision involving any pharmaceutical manufacturer or vaccine that they had worked on. When we're talking about work on, they participate as a clinical or trial investigator. And what that means is they help review the safety and efficacy data in these randomized double-blinded clinical trials. And double-blinded means they don't know who got the vaccine and who didn't. So they are completely looking at this as objectively.

So, and the problem with conflicts is it depends on how you manage them. And these were managed well is what the arguments you're making.

These were managed well, unlike a couple of the people that RFK has appointed to this new panel. It includes two people, experts who have served and have received money from the trial lawyers suing vaccine makers.

Yeah, talk about the new list. What strikes you about them, Kyle?

Yeah, some of them aren't even doctors. One of them is a guy who has been anti-vaccine with stuff like he's been on the internet Monday morning quarterbacking the treatment of a couple of kids in Texas who had measles and died of measles, saying that their treatment was inadequate for one reason or another. And I'm not a doctor, so I'm not qualified to assess that, but a key question would be whether they would've benefited from getting the measles vaccine. And that is the thing that I think is at risk here. The US eliminated measles in 2000, meaning that there are still cases when somebody comes from abroad and brings it and spreads it, but they've been very low. The most that we've had in the United States since 2000 was in 2019 there were about 1300 cases, and this year we're already up to about 1200. And if measles comes back in a big way, there are gonna be a lot of people that are gonna end up in the hospital.

Kim, what is RFK Jr's vaccine agenda? What does he want to do? Does he want a lot fewer vaccines? Does he want to make sure that some of the current vaccines are removed from approval? Where's he headed?

He's actually been very clear about his strategy, Paul. You can look at interviews he gave when he was running for president before he was appointed to this post. His goal in doing this with this panel, and by the way, I think it's a model for what he'll do with many other panels that exist to advise on different products, is he wants to put out a stacked science, as it were, call it science, by people who cast doubt on these products. Which then allow the trial bar to go sue companies essentially out of existence and change it through the marketplace. He can therefore say that he's just producing good science. He's not making the decision to shut down this or that product, but he's allowing his trial lawyer friends to enrich themselves and manage the market from that direction, from the courtroom.

Allysia, do you think that this is gonna restore public trust in the institutions of public health?

I think it'll do just the opposite. And what you saw is with Anthony Fauci, who was often deceptive, slippery in what he said, and RFK is the same way. He's not being honest to the public. And I think that will actually redown to the detriment of the administration.

At the end of the day, 'cause some of these vaccines will look, decisions will look political?

Well, not just that they'll look political. He'll try to make it seem like the government hid or concealed side effects that they knew all along. And that'll just undermine public trust in public health institutions.
