How to Fire Better: Lessons From 'The Attributes' Author

Now, the good thing about attributes, and the ironic thing about attributes, is I discovered this because I was told to fire people better. I mean, I was basically saying, "You need to be able to explain to guys why they're not making it through." And so, what's interesting is that we actually have helped organizations fire better too. Because when you actually can sit someone down and explain to them why they're actually not performing, it's a much more palatable conversation because then you can add to it, "Oh, by the way, this is all the stuff you're good at. And I'm gonna help you go find a role that actually fits what you're good at." The other thing that happens is, once you start talking attributes and you start seeding attributes into the culture, people will self-deselect because they'll start to recognize why they don't feel like they fit in. It's like, "Wait a second, this company moves so fast and everything's on fire and I'm low on adaptability and I hate that stuff. I can't stand it. So you know what? I'm gonna find a different role." And even the deselection of the firing process becomes way more fulfilling and educational and you create allies versus enemies. And so, that's how I would break that down, in terms of culture and then individual teams, yeah.
