Free Expression on the Weekend: The Cultural Fight for Conservative Women

The world of entertainment and media has long been dominated by the left, but some are trying to promote conservative values to even the playing field. I spoke to Jayme Franklin, the co-founder of an online digital magazine called The Conservateur, which covers topics ranging from Melania Trump's style to the declining rates of dating and marriage. Here's our conversation. I'd love to ask a bit about how you got into the business of starting The Conservateur.

I just saw the culture not only on my college campus change so much after Trump's election in 2016, but also in these magazines. And, you know, obviously, they would like run spreads about Hillary Clinton or I remember there was a famous like AOC spread, but it wasn't necessarily just like that they were obviously only supporting a Democrat woman and liberal woman. You know, Melania Trump never got a cover. But for me, it was actually more the values that they were pushing in a lot of their op-eds, whether we're talking about just like really hardcore feminism, don't get married, don't have a family, marriage is oppressive, men are oppressive, America's oppressive. It's just these very toxic far left ideas onto young women. And I just realized, I don't think like the left talks about being so tolerant, but I don't think I'd be accepted, you know, writing more of a conservative style piece about marriage, motherhood, conservative values, my Christian faith, I don't think that would be accepted at Vogue Magazine and so I just decided to go ahead and start my own.

I saw that The Conservateur and your podcast has been called "Vogue for Trumpsters." Would you define it as that?

You know, I kind of think we're our own lane, to be honest, and I actually take that as, you know, I'm very happy when people call us that. I take it as a huge compliment when they compare us. I would say we're kind of like a mixture of a lot of different just online publications. You know, we're political in a sense, but we're not crazy. It's just like very common sense values. We're pro-life, we're pro Christian, we're pro-America, we're pro-family. We're about, you know, making women the best versions of themselves and promoting ideals that we believe will lead there, but we believe in free speech and the other side has every right to publish what they want to and we're gonna do our own thing.

The latest polling finds at 17% of Gen Z women identify as Republicans, making this generation of women the most liberal out of any cohort in the country. What is the audience that you're appealing to here?

I never like to box this in. I would say, if you were going to say, what's the stereotypical Conservateur follower, probably a girl in her twenties, just graduated college and is living in a very blue city and is kind of more of a cosmopolitan girl, but has more conservative values. The stats that you just said is exactly why we exist. There is so much work to do with young women. And if you look at the media that exists for young women, whether it be the fashion magazines, whether it be Call Her Daddy, the number one podcast for women. You look on social media, it's just been completely captured by the left and The Conservateur has really like charted this new pathway where we're trying to, you know, go against that and create a better value system. And we welcome people of all political backgrounds, all cultural backgrounds. You don't necessarily need to be a Christian. There's really something for everyone there. I think we can be a building bridge in a time where like things are so divisive in this day and age.

If you could put it in your own words, what is feminism and what kind of vision are you trying to propose?

Well, I think you've seen feminism change a lot over the years. What we've seen feminism become, it's transformed into something that disempowers women. They're not for uplifting all women. They're only for uplifting a very specific political ideology. Owning our femininity is a big part of the conservative movement, whether that be as a mom or taking on more traditional gender roles or loving fashion or loving feminine things. I'm just for women becoming the best versions of themselves. And I think feminism is just a very toxic ideology that doesn't lead women towards true happiness.

There are, I think, at least in some cohorts, more and more people attending church. How do you feel about this sort of cultural moment that we're seeing right now and what do you think it reflects in society?

Well, I think it's fantastic. First of all, I think a lot of people are looking for meaning and purpose in their life. And in my opinion, there's no better place to find that than through faith. You look at a lot of mainline Protestant churches in the US right now, and you see pride flags outside. You see BLM flags outside. You see a lot of them have taken this very woke turn and you've seen people leaving those denominations because of their movement towards, you know, this woke preaching. Obviously politics matter in our country, but I think our culture matters the most and I think the church brings great values. It brings people together. It brings a positive vision for people in their lives. It builds families. The more people going to church, the better country and the better culture.
